Mental health problems are often understood as a result of one’s personal experiences outside the workplace. However, research reveals that an unhealthy work environment can lead to stress, burnout, and the development of a larger mental health problem such as depression or anxiety. As the statistics reveal: 
  • Nearly half of Australians aged 16-85 will experience these conditions in their lifetime (ABS). 
  • 1 in 4 people experience a this problem every year (ABS)
  • Only 52% of employees consider their workplace to be a mentally healthy environment (TNS Social Research)
  • 92% of serious workplace mental health concerns are attributed to work-related stressors (Safe Work Australia)
According to Safe Work Australia, workplace mental stress is largely driven by work pressure, work-related harassment, general stress, and exposure to unsafe environments. The global pandemic has only exacerbated work pressures and stress, signalling a rise in work-related mental health problems. 


Unresolved mental health conditions cost the Australian workforce approximately $11 billion per year. This expense involves:

Stress and Burnout

Workplace burnout is the experience of physical or emotional exhaustion, apathy, and detachment induced by unhealthy working environments. A common precursor to burnout is workplace stress.  Surveys suggest that:
  • Australians have one of the highest rates of burnout of any country in 2020.  
  • 73% of the nation’s workers experience overwhelming stress as a result of particular working conditions (ABS, 2020 )
  • 77% experience burnout (Safe Work Australia, 2019 )

  • In the past year, 1 in 5 Australians (21%) have been absent from work because they felt stressed, anxious, depressed or mentally unhealthy.
  • 1 in 10 Australians are estimated to have depression.
  • On average, employees with depression takes 3-4 days off each month.
  • Untreated depression has resulted in the loss of 6 million working days each year in Australia.
